Harvest for the Hungry Non-Profit Attains GAP Certification

Farm to table grower and processor of fruits, vegetables, honey, eggs, fish, and other foods achieves GAP certification with zero findings after partnering with Kellerman Consulting.

The Overview:

Harvest for the Hungry sought out Kellerman Consulting to write and implement their Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification program for their 61 acre farm to table operation in Freeport, Texas.  Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) audits are voluntary third-party audits that verify that fruits and vegetables are produced, packed, handled, and stored to minimize food safety risk.

Our Process

Intake Process and Food Safety Gap Assessment

In the first month of the project, one of Kellerman Consulting’s Food Safety & ISO Consultants visited the farm, warehouse, storage, and packaging areas to identify any facility changes or considerations that would need to be made prior to audit.

GAP Program Development

The Kellerman Consulting Food Safety & Quality Consultant created an FDA compliant food safety program, and a GAP certification program tailored to fit with Harvest for the Hungry processes and procedures.

The GAP certification program covered key areas including:

1 – Farm Review

2 – Field Harvest / Field Packing Activities

3 – House packing facility

4 – Storage & Transportation

5 – Preventive Food Defense Procedures

Implementation

The Kellerman Consulting GAP certification consultant structured implementation to help Harvest for the Hungry meet their audit goal.

The Kellerman Consulting  GAP consultant customized the program to their specific processes and procedures.

Audit Preparation and Support

  • A second full-day site visit was conducted to complete a full in-person internal audit of the GAP certification program and to check again for any facility concerns or recommendations.
  • Findings from the Internal Audit helped guide final efforts to prepare for the GAP audit and close all identified gaps in the program.
  • During the audit, our GAP consultant was available to offer support and a GAP certificate was issued by the certifying body.
