Amazon Supplier Food Safety

Amazon is a multinational technology company that requires either Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) recognized certification or a different food safety certification audit depending on the type of supplier you are.  

Key Food Safety Certification Requirements for Amazon Suppliers:

Depending on the type of supplier, Amazon may accept either a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) recognized audit such as SQF, BRCGS, PrimusGFS, or FSSC 22000, or a non-GFSI certified audit such as a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification audit, or  Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) audit.

Amazon Third Party Food Safety Audit Expectations

Amazon divides the food safety third-party audit expectations for its suppliers into different supplier types.  

Chilled and Frozen Foods Amazon Food Safety Audit Requirements

  • Amazon recognizes GFSI benchmarked certifications (for example, BRC, SQF, FSSC 22000, PrimusGFS).
  • Food suppliers that don’t yet have GFSI benchmarked certification should refer to additional Amazon food safety requirements.

Amazon’s Infant Formula Food Safety Expectations

  • Amazon requires a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) certificate or a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certificate for each manufacturing facility. 

Amazon Third Party Expectations for Dietary Supplements (Other Than Sports Nutrition or Bodybuilding)

  • Amazon may ask for a valid good manufacturing practice (GMP) certificate 

OR  

  • Evidence of participation in one of the following certification programs: NSF/ANSI 173 Product Certification, NSF Certified for Sport®, BSCG Certified Drug Free®, Informed-Choice/ Informed-Sport Program, USP Dietary Supplement Verification Program, or UL Brand Certification Program.

Amazon Audit Expectations for Supplements Intended for Sports Nutrition and Bodybuilding

  • You may be asked to submit A finished product Certificate of Analysis (COA) for certain compounds

OR  

  • Evidence of participation in one of the following certification programs: NSF/ANSI 173 Product Certification, NSF Certified for Sport®, BSCG Certified Drug Free®, Informed-Choice/ Informed-Sport Program, USP Dietary Supplement Verification Program, or UL Brand Certification Program.

For High-risk Raw Agricultural Commodity Produce

  • Amazon requires a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) recognized certificate for High-risk Raw Produce.

For Non High-Risk Raw Agricultural Commodity and Rarely Consumed as Raw Produce

Amazon accepts GFSI-recognized audits , Primus Standard Audit (GMP or GAP), and USDA Harmonized Audit (GMP or GAP).

Amazon Baby Food Food Safety Certification Requirements

  • A valid Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) recognized certificate OR a valid Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certificate for each manufacturing facility.
