ISO, The International Organization for Standardization published ISO 9001:2026 on September 16th, 2026. ISO 9001:2026 replaces ISO 9001:2015. Organizations already certified to ISO 9001:2015 will have time to transition to the new version of the ISO 9001 standard based on the timeline set by their certification cycle.

ISO 9001:2026 Key Updates
- Quality Culture– There is new language in the ISO 9001:2026 standard that emphasizes the importance of awareness of “quality culture”. It is recommended to implement a quality culture campaign to train and engage employees and establish accountability without blame.
- Ethical Behavior– Updates to the ISO 9001:2026 promotes ethical behavior. It is recommended to create an ethics policy that outlines your company’s values and commitment to follow ethical principles, such as, not falsifying results, not selling defective products, and honestly conducting internal audits.
- Climate Change– The ISO 9001:2026 standard now requires organizations to assess whether climate change is a relevant issue and also to examine if there are climate change requirements for interested parties. In order to apply this section of the ISO 9001:2026 code to your QMS, you can look at the impact your business has on climate change, and the impact climate change has on your business.
- Separating Risks & Opportunities– In ISO 9001:2026 Risks and Opportunities are no longer combined into one clause in the standard. Risks and Opportunities are now separated out into separate clauses, which calls attention to the importance of assessing opportunities, in addition to risks.
- Terms & Definitions & Annex A- Terms and conditions are added from ISO 9000, and Annex A adds additional advice for implementing ISO 9001:2026.
